John Paul II Pontifical Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family at CANA is the Asian Session of the Pontifical Institute in Rome, situated at the Lateral University. It was inaugurated in 1997 by the then President of the Institute and the Rector of the Lateran University, Bishop Angelo Scola ( Now Angelo Cardinal Scola, the Patriarch of Venice, Italy). 

The Archbishop of Changanacherry, India  is the Grand Vice Chancellor of the Institute. Rev. Dr. Joseph Alencherry is the Vice President. Rev. Dr. Antony Chundelikkat is the Registrar of the Institute and Rev. Dr. Jacob Koippally, the Dean of  studies. The Professors come from India and abroad. 

The Institute offers the following programs. 

I. Licentiate Programme

  • Two year Programme in Theology

  • Additional training in Family Ministry

  • Starts in October every year

  • Time to Apply: April to August 31st

  • Classes are from Monday through Thursday. Training in both Theory and Practice

  • Medium of instruction: English

  • Minimum requirement: B. Th. or B.D. in Theology

  • Graduates will be eligible for admission for Doctorate in Theology at any University in India or Abroad

  • Degree is awarded by Lateran University, Rome

  • Partial Scholarships available on first come first served basis to cover the academic fees.

  • Hostel facility available: Rs. 1500/- only

  • Registration fee: Rs. 550/-; Graduation fee: Rs. 500/-

  • For foreign students US $ 1000 per semester (Boarding. Lodging and other Academic expenses included)

II. Master's Programme

   (a) M.A. in Family Studies

  • Two year Programme in Family Studies

  • Integrated and well-developed training in Family Apostolate, especially in Counselling with practicum

  • Starts in September every year

  • Time to Apply: April to July 31st

  • Classes are from Monday through Thursday. Training in both Theory and Practice

  • Medium of teaching: English

  • Basic requirement: Bachelor's Degree in any subject

  • M. A. will be awarded by the Lateran University, Rome

  • Partial Scholarships available to cover academic fees

  • Hostel facility available: Fees Rs. 1500/- only

  • Registration fee: Rs. 550/-; Graduation fee: Rs. 500/- 

  • For foreign students US $ 1000 per semester (Boarding. Lodging and other Academic expenses included)

   (b) M.A. in Bioethics

  • Two year Programme in Bioethics

  • Integrated and well-developed training in Bioethical issues

  • Starts in September every year

  • Time to Apply: April to August 31st

  • Classes are from Monday through Thursday

  • Medium of teaching: English

  • Basic requirement: Bachelor's Degree in any subject

  • M. A. will be awarded by the Lateran University, Rome

  • Partial Scholarships available to cover academic fees

  • Hostel facility available: Fees Rs. 1500/- only

  • Registration fee: Rs. 550/-; Graduation fee: Rs. 500/- 

III. Diploma Course in Family Ministry

  • Four months' (400 hours) intense training in Family Apostolate

  • Starts in October every year

  • Time to apply: April to August 31st

  • Classes are from Monday through Friday. Training in both Theory and Practice

  • Medium of instruction: English or Malayalam according to the nature of the class

  • Diploma will be awarded by the Institute

  • Academic fee: Rs. 4000/- (lf two or more candidates are sponsored by the same diocese or organization, only Rs. 3500/- for each candidate)

  • Hostel facility available: Rs. 1500/- only

  • Registration fee: Rs. 250/-, Graduation fee: Rs. 100/-

  • For foreign students US $ 1000 only (Boarding. Lodging and other Academic expenses included)

IV. Diploma Course in Pastoral Counselling 

  • Four months' (300 hrs.) intense training in Pastoral Counselling on weekends and holidays

  • Starts in February every year

  • Time to Apply: November to January 31st

  • Training in Theory and Practice included.

  • Medium of teaching: Malayalam

  • Diploma will be awarded by the Institute

  • Total fee: Rs. 4000/- to cover Tuition, Boarding and Lodging

  • Registration fee: Rs. 250/-; Graduation fee: Rs. 100/-

This is the only institute in Asia which offers training in  Family Services and Counselling and awards post graduate degrees.
